Semi-Annual Hearing on the CFPB

OMB Director Mick Mulvaney, a controversial appointment by President Trump to also serve as Consumer Financial Protection Bureau acting director, delivered his first Semi-Annual Report of the CFPB to the House (Wednesday) and Senate (Thursday) this week. Here is the U.S. PIRG Statement for the Hearing Record.

Public Interest Privacy Principles

Today, we joined 34 civil rights, consumer, and privacy organizations in releasing shared Public Interest Privacy Principles because the public needs and deserves strong and comprehensive federal legislation to protect their privacy and afford meaningful redress. The principles lay down minimum standards for any federal privacy protection legislation expected to be considered in 2019. We expect powerful special interests to instead push for a weak law that allows them to continue business as usual: treating us as if were their product, not their customer.

Copy of U.S. PIRG's Complaint, Lawsuit over FTC Action on Unsafe Cars

You’d think that a car dealer couldn’t say that a used car is “safe” if that car is subject to a safety recall (like the Takata airbag recall or the GM ignition switch recall). But, because of a recent action taken by the Federal Trade Commission, used car dealers can do just that. In response, U.S. PIRG and other leading car safety advocacy groups—Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety (CARS) and the Center for Auto Safety—have sued the FTC and are asking the court to invalidate the FTC’s action. The complaint is available below.
